The Human Factor in Preventing Cyber-Crime and Cyber-Victimization / Israel Criminology Association Conference

Date:

Thu, 18/05/2017 - 10:45 to 12:15

Location:

Institute of Criminology, Faculty of Law, The Hebrew University

The vulnerabilities of cyberspace are not only affected by its architecture and technological infrastructure, but rather by human behavior as well. While this is the case, research on the prevention of cyber-crime and cyber-victimization has focused mainly on technological solutions and less on the human factor and its importance.

Drawing on criminological theories and the data collected in Israel and the U.S. we try to provide a better understanding of the influence of situational factors and self-control in shaping individual willingness to engage in deviant online behaviors or become the victim of online crimes.

We report findings from a series of studies that used varied methodologies (surveys, field observations and a unique online experiment) in order to test the human factor and reveal cognitive processes and behaviors of cybercrime offenders and victims.

The research is under a grant of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space (prof. Gustavo Mesch, principal investigator).
